EMDR
What is EMDR?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy method that helps people to heal from symptoms of trauma, anxiety and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences. Studies show that EMDR can help people experience significant and lasting benefits over a brief period, which might otherwise take years in traditional talk-based therapy.
One of the benefits of EMDR therapy is that it does not require you to talk in great detail about a distressing issue, or doing homework between sessions. In fact, if something is deeply troubling, you do not need to speak specifically about the issue at all for EMDR to be successful. Unlike CBT, rather than focusing on changing the emotions, thoughts, or beliefs as a result of a distressing issue, EMDR allows the mind and nervous system to resume its own natural healing process.
While recommended by the WHO, UNHCR, Dept. of Defence in the US and NICE in the UK, as a highly effective way of treating trauma and PTSD, it is also highly successful in treating anxiety and other phobias.
